UV Protective Fabrics – SPF You Wear

In the not too distant future, shopping for “summer clothes” may take on a whole new meaning.  UV protection fabrics are the latest innovation in wearable UV protection and offer some interesting possibilities.
While traditional sunscreen lotions block some of the sun's harmful rays, most people use too little lotion or apply incorrectly to be effective.  Additionally, geographic variables in UV intensities, unique body chemistry’s, perspiration and wear also reduce the effectiveness.  UV protection fabrics provide consistent and effective UV protection under all conditions.
The basic science behind UV protection fabric is chemical UV inhibitors and UV Blocking weave technology.  To receive a UV Block certification, sun protection fabrics must meet stringent industry and governmental guidelines.  UVBLOCK® certified means that:
  •   The fabric has been tested for ultraviolet light transmission
  • It is then laundered 40 times and submitted to 100 hours of UV light
  • Once again tested for UV Light transmission (AATCC 183), then given a certified rating and labeled
  • ONLY fabrics tested by the International UV Testing Laboratories are UVBLOCK® certified.
  • ALL SPF FABRICS® are UVBLOCK certified, so you can be assured of the Best in Sun Protection.

The FDA regulates any fabric or garment that makes specific claims of a medical nature.    FDA approved fabrics are guaranteed to reduce UV radiation by 97% or more.   The Solar Protection Factory produces several UVBlock fabrics.  SolarWeave®, a lightweight, woven, nylon fabric; SolarKnit®, a cotton jersey treated with UV block; and SolarTwill®, a heavier treated fabric.   All three fabrics are FDA approved and commonly used in UV protection garments and accessories.
Although UV protection fabric is usually found in outdoor garments, one company that specializes in UV blocking products for indoor tanning salons has taken the SolarWeave®,  fabric and created products that protect the hair and face from UV rays while tanning indoors.

If you are going to spend time outdoors, consider  UV protection fabrics as a viable alternative to sunscreen.  UVBlock fabrics provide substantially better UV protection and you look good doing it.

What to Include On Your Website To Attract New Clients

Today I want to target the salon website and give you a couple tips on how you can use it to capture new clients that are the ideal match for your salon.

Now don’t get upset by what I say but try to see this from your clients point of view. Most websites I see it looks as though we in the industry are trying to impress each other with our talent rather than appealing to the clients who we are wanting to do business with. They are usually contain photos of young pretty girls, thin girls, who have perfect hair and skin and are wearing suggestive clothing sporting hair no one would ever wear on the street. Being in the beauty industry I can truly appreciate and admire the artists talent but how does the client perceive this and will it capture their attention long enough to browse your site or intimidate them? I also see salons trying to sell to the client by telling them how wonderful they are rather than giving the client what they want.

If you have a lot of clients and your public profile is all your website is designed for then by all means put up the flashy pictures of hairstyles and impress people with the talent of your team. But if your primary purpose is to attract clients with your site then build it to work for you How do you do this?

1. Know who you are looking to attract by knowing the profile of the person who will see value in being a client of your salon…your ideal client.

2. Capture their attention by giving them something they will value.

3. Gain their trust that you are the expert to care for their needs.

What to include with your strategy:

Include a very brief “tip” of the week so visitors see value in returning to your site. I know a salon blog can serve this purpose as well but clients don’t always spend enough time roaming your site to get the good stuff, offer it right there on the home page.

This “tip” when promoted right is your golden opportunity to subtly introduce them to your salon brand while giving them a piece of valuable information. For example; if your salon is famous for doing corrective color, share with your visitors just how a proper color consultation should be done to ensure client satisfaction. Be careful not to say “this is how we do it here” but adapt the tone of “look for this is the salon you choose to care for your tresses”.

Have an opt in box where you can collect their name and email address. These days people are reluctant to give out this information for a simple newsletter so you must make the offer so appealing that they can’t wait to get what you are offering. Again, if you have done the work to know your ideal client and position the offer as something they WANT, not need they will be happy to provide this information in exchange for the gift.

Your gifts could include; hair and makeup photo shoots for company portfolios if you are attracting corporate clients. Couple massage lessons for the active dual income earners or a series of how to videos to keep the glow in aging skin if your ideal client is the mature generation.

*Remember when making your offer that it is purely a gift that you know will change their lives. Once you give them value they will be more inclined to buy from you and now that you have their name and email address you can follow up with salon specials, promotions and events that will bring them through the door.

Getcha Nails Did Reviews NAILSavers

NAILSAVERS - PRODUCT REVIEW

I have a new (to me) product that I would like to share with you all today. The product is called NAILSavers and it does just what the name suggests, it saves your false nails from yellowing, color fading, drying, and lifting caused by UV exposure in tanning beds. What an awesome invention, right? I have used false nails and tanning beds before, and for any of you that use them too, this is a great product for you.

Here is a little bit about NAILSavers:

NAILSavers™ is proud to announce their 10th anniversary serving the indoor tanning industry. The company’s longstanding relationship with salon owners dates back to the late nineties when they unveiled their flagship product NAILSavers™.
NAILSavers™ are a remarkably handy, reusable nail cover system that completely protects all types of nails from the ravages of UV Light, especially while tanning indoors. The NAILSavers™ reusable system is constructed of soft, durable (latex-free) PVC with powerful UV inhibitors.
Over the past 10 years NAILSavers™ products have become a trusted brand that can be found in tanning salons from coast to coast.
NAILSavers™ is the brainchild of company founders Chris Scheurn and Eileen Allen. The company’s flagship product NAILSavers™ was created out of necessity. “Chris and I are avid tanners and over the years discovered that our passion for tanning took a toll on our nails. We created a simple but effective solution to maintain our nails without interfering with our tanning.” Says Eileen Allen. After the success of their core product, the company has also created TOESavers, FACESavers and HAIRSavers, designed exclusively for indoor tanner.

I was kindly sent a product sample for review. Each package of the NAILSavers comes with 11, which I found to be pretty handy in case you lose one. I liked that they were bright pink for a couple of reasons, one I like bright pink and second, if dropped it would easily be spotted.

Basically they are little plastic protective caps for your fingertips. I tried them all on and they fit very nicely on my tips. None were too tight or too loose. However, they do have other options for making them fit, either by turning them sideways and putting them on if they are too loose.

NAILSavers shown worn with them put on sideways.

Or if they are too tight, taking a pair of scissors and cutting a small slit on the side. After I put them on I gave my hand a good shake, just to see how well they stayed on, and they all did with the exception of my pinky one, however, I don't foresee anyone needing to shake their hand that vigorously while tanning.

They are priced pretty reasonably at $15.00 per pack. You might find these for sale at your local tanning place or nail place, but you can order them direct from NAILSavers.

Not only do they offer these for your nails, but they also have some designed for your toes too! I also see available FACESavers, which is much better than just using a towel to cover your face during tanning. You can check out all their other products on their website NAILSavers.com.

Throw in the Towel and Use Certified UV Blocking Specialty Products

FaceSavers utilizes a revolutionary Solarweave UV inhibiting fabric that blocks 99.7%of UVA and UVB rays

Visit any tanning salon in the world and most if not all salon owners can explain the fundamental differences between UVA and UVB. Visit any tanning salon that offers multiple levels of tanning, and UV education becomes more prevalent and essential to properly identifying and defining the correct types of equipment, exposure schedules and frequency necessary to serve a customer’s specific tanning needs.

Regardless of a salons size, location or equipment selection, UV protective eyewear is always mandatory. Tanning salon owners and their professional staffs do a great job of UV educating and providing world class tans, but when the topic of UV blocking extends beyond protective eyewear
or SPF for outdoor exposure, blocking UV indoors is virtually an untapped specialty area which can provide new revenue opportunities for savvy salon owners.

A growing number of scenarios are emerging where tanners are seeking indoor UV blocking solutions for a whole myriad of purposes. Some of the most common customer UV “cover ups” that you may encounter are UV protection for tattoos, scars, acrylic nails, sensitive body parts, hair and faces. These niche retail opportunities provide a small but effective way for your salon to broaden your specialty solutions and improve the bottom line.

Adding specialty products like these to your mix is relatively inexpensive and allows for better than average margins. Sometimes adding specialty products can be a competitive advantage, retail advantage or simply provide you with peace of mind.

One particular UV Blocking scenario that is gaining momentum in salons is “faceless tanning”. Faceless tanning is essentially tanning while covering the face and neck. The most common method for covering the face and neck is to drape a salon towel or item of clothing over the face and neck. Your clients may believe that this method works, but a salon towel does not adequately block UV rays (only 6-10%) and it is certainly not a valid substitution for protective eyewear.

Thanks to the folks at Gotcha Covered FaceSavers there is a UV Block and SPF certified solution for faceless tanning that keeps your customers faces safely covered. FaceSavers utilizes a revolutionary Solarweave® UV inhibiting fabric that blocks 99.7% of UVA and UVB rays for up to 100 hours of UV exposure. FaceSavers Solarweave® fabric undergoes rigorous testing by the International UV testing laboratory to earn its UV Block certification . Three methods of certification ensure that the fabric meets all governmental UV blocking criteria.

UV blocking specialty items are affordable, effective and provide proper coverage for your clients. Maybe it’s time to throw in the towel… and protect your salon, protect your clients and pay attention to the growing need for specialty retail UV Blocking add-on items.

Indoor Versus Outdoor Tanning

Indoor Versus Outdoor Tanning
by: Angela Maroevich

The benefits of indoor tanning versus outdoor tanning are widely discussed in the cosmetic and health industries, It is ultimately up to you to decide which method is healthy and convenient for you.

When you visit an indoor tanning facility, your skin produces a tan in the same way that it does when you bask in the sun -- through the absorption of ultraviolet light.

However, one of the dangers of outdoor tanning is exposing yourself to too much ultraviolet light. Climate changes in the atmosphere that has many of us slathering on sunblock and sunscreen before we step outside in the hot sun.

One of the benefits of indoor tanning is that it allows you to control the amount of UV light that you are exposed to, so that you do not get a sunburn or prepare your epidermis for a predisposition to skin cancer.

You cannot control harmful UV rays from the sun anymore than you can control the weather.

Compared to indoor tanning, outdoor tanning is actually one of the most unreliable ways to achieve that perfect tan. It is, however, a reliable way to achieve a sunburn. Waiting for a reddish burn to fade to a brown accelerates the aging process.

Indoor tanning equipment utilizes the same two kinds of ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB rays that are emitted by the sun. Indoor tanning procedures are highly regulated by government agencies in both Canada and the United States and the equipment is designed to mimic the effect of sunlight.

At a professional indoor tanning salon, exposure times are determined by equipment and trained professionals that take into account previous tanning sessions as well as the tanner's skin type. This minimizes the possibility of the kind of skin damage that is common with outdoor tanning.

Convenience may also be a consideration when it comes to deciding whether indoor tanning versus outdoor tanning is best for you. Depending on weather conditions and government warnings that are issued about the strength of harmful UV rays emitted by the sun, it might not be possible for you to achieve that polished bronze look in time for that important meeting.

One of the main benefits of indoor tanning is that safe regular doses of ultraviolet light are prescribed for you in a controlled environment that suits your agenda.

Indoor tanning is also a great help for those suffering from diseases, such as psoriasis or osteoporosis, as UV rays assist the body in manufacturing the Vitamin D it needs to allay such conditions. This is a great benefit to individuals who need to "take their solar vitamins" regularly and are unable to do so on a rainy day.

A session in an indoor tanning facility is an intelligent way to maximize your health while at the same time minimizing your risk of sunburn.

You don't want too much exposure to UV rays, but the many benefits of indoor tanning, which also include prevention against wrinkles, should be carefully considered the next time you are tempted to slather on sunblock and lie out in the sun.

Many Tanners are Becoming More Cautious

Many tanners are becoming more cautious about UV exposure on their face. Unfortunately, the extra towel requested to put over your face while tanning is virtually ineffective – not to mention heavy and suffocating. In fact, industry data states that towels only block 6-10% of UV rays. Although some tanning beds are equipped with built in face shields, you are still receiving substantial residual UV exposure. Our FACESaver is an effective solution.
Fabric:

* Solarweave® SPF fabric construction
* Blocks greater than 99.8% of harmful UV rays for up to 100 hours.
* Manufacturer of Solarweave® makes fabrics used by NASA

Only fabrics tested by the International UV Testing Laboratory are UV Block® Certified – a critical safety factor utilized in the development of FACESavers. It blocks 99.7% of UVA & UVB rays for up to 100 hours of UV exposure and 40 launderings. For more information on the actual testing Solarweave® has undergone, visit www.uvtesting.org.
Mask Construction:

* Two ply gives extra UV protection
* Velcro® straps secure mask for stand-up units
* Rigilene® boning pulls mask away from face allowing air circulation and easier breathing
* Random Hawaiian prints
* Hand wash to preserve integrity of rigelene boning and insure longevity of mask.

Simply lay the FACESAVER UV MASK over the face with the vertical boning resting on the nose. You can secure the mask if desired depending on the fan output; however, we recommend securing loosely for maximum comfort. For added coolness and refreshment, wet the mask before tanning.

Please remember that the FACESaver is not meant to replace industry regulated eyewear. PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR SHOULD ALWAYS BE WORN WHILE TANNING!

The Makers of NAILSavers Introduces HAIRSavers!!

Did you know that women spend 160 billion dollars annually on their beautification? Having your hair cut and colored has to be a big part of that expenditure. Hair color on the average in a salon can run from $40-$80 per application and salon stylist recommend re-application every 6-8 weeks.
Now if your a vibrant red hair, red hair coloring fades quickly and needs to perked up after a few short weeks. If you are a tanner the color fades even faster. Lets not mention that tanning dries your hair out as well. You can cover your hair with a towel but did you know that it is only equivalent to 6 -10% SFP...
You can use a towel or you can use a HAIRSaver. HAIRSavers will protect your hair and your hair color. Constructed with Solarweave® Sun Protective Fabric and a UV Block® Certified (highest rating of 50+UPF). This unique design enhances air circulation & maximizes comfort.
